The Mary in Every Woman

The Mary in Every Woman

As all women do,
She had a knowing.
Not of everything,
But certainly of those things
Important to, but not spoken of,
By her husband and children.

She knew of loves and desires.
And of
That which was feared
And of
That which was needed.

She did not speak of her knowing.
At times she could not even
Bring it to mind.
There was no need to do so,
Because she always knew.

Mother's Day in the United States is coming up soon.  We are told by advertisers and those in the know, that we should celebrate and thank our mothers. Yep, I agree.  Well actually, we should celebrate every individual human on this earth some how and in some way.  But back to the subject at hand.  Mothers generally know a lot. If they are wise mothers, they know when to share what they have divined and when to keep silent.  My mother did, and I celebrate her for it.  I am a better person because Irma knew when to share the secrets, if ever.   Your poet, skp

A Story of Delicacy

"They met in the night."

A Story of Delicacy

They met under the covers,
This couple in the night.
He and she barely touched,
But their subtle intensity
Was intoxicating.

With her fingers, she
Followed the lines of his life that
Were etched in his hands.
She spent a half a hour just on the
Right hand alone.
The touch lifted her.

Then she went to his left hand.  It
Too told his story.
She felt it in the hollow of his palm
And in the strength of his fingers.
She was reminded of what she
Already knew about him.

Their lips almost met,
Their bodies almost entwined,
But intentionally they did not.
Magnetism ensued.
Hands heeded the passion.
He responded
By placing her hand
Just where it needed to be.
She did the same.

The Lament of the New Butterfly

Picture
A beautiful red butterfly coming out of camouflage.

The Lament of the New Butterfly

There is yellow
Coming out of
Things in the yard.
There is a lighter
Shade of green
Out there as well.

It must be Spring.
When did that happen?

I was quite liking my
Brown and grey cocoon,
So safe and quiet.
Now, I will have to unfold my wings.

I liked being wrapped up in my self.
I liked not seeing anything else but
The inside of me.

And now with my wings unfolded,
(But, oh, my Lord, aren’t they gorgeous!)
With them ready to go,
I am expected to flit and fly
Visiting other creatures, that
I can only tolerate for a moment or two.

Oh, Spring, what hast thou done to me!

I trot out this oldie but goodie poem almost every spring.  It makes me laugh.  This poor butterfly is destined to be beautiful and busy flitting around.  But, no, it just wants to be warm and brown.  Ah, isn't it the way it is so often in life?

And, because I posted 'The Lament of the New Butterfly' often, I am posting a second poem,
The Usual Protestations'.  Enjoy.

*****************************************
The Usual
Protestations

‘To you my dear.’
A cup of tea is lifted
Out of respect
And in love.

‘No, no, no to you!’
A glass of wine
Is raised
In dissent.

They bicker
Back and forth
In mock challenge,
Neither of them
Prevailing in the
Comic dispute.

It doesn’t matter
Who is victorious.
Such battles are common,
In their very uncommon life.

'Mysteries matched by simple sensibilities, great circles of wisdom in the making', all over the world.

The Circular Sense of the Wisdom of Women

And so it goes.
From one woman to another.
Sometimes taking mere minutes,
Other times…years.

Secrets, blessings,
Hints, urgings,
Instructions.
Permission.

I’ve seen it happen.
Minds that speak.
Hearts that listen.

A ring of understanding.
One woman seeks and another
Answers with living knowledge.
Then ‘round to the next sister.
Mysteries matched by simple sensibilities.
Great circles of wisdom in the making.

Shhh!  Can you hear it?  That is the sound of women working together.  I read in the newspaper that women are poised to take on more responsibility and power in the running of these United States, if not the world.  Well, good for women.  Apparently there are more females than ever before...huge numbers... signing up to run for office.  Yep.  When women get equal representation, there just may be great circles of wisdom in the making.  It has been said that women work better together than men do. Further, when banned together, they are a strong force to be reckoned with.  It might be true.  Let's hope so.  We women are finally learning and believing in our talents and intelligence.  Here is to the efforts of great women all over the world.  skp

The Good Love Will Be Timeless; The Great Love Will Be Endless

Time belonged to other people, as did politics and occupation and rush.

The Good Love Will Be Timeless,
The Great Love Will Be Endless

They wanted and waited
For nothing.
Time was neither a
Friend nor an enemy.
It wasn’t really part of their life.

Time belonged to other people,
As did politics
And occupation
And rush.

Theirs was a world of
Tranquility by demand,
Intellect by nature,
Detachment by choice.

Love had found them young
And they claimed it
As their past and future.
There is no doubt,
No fear,
No need for explanation.

And so it will be,
No matter what.

Oh, that we could ignore the world and all of its stress.  Maybe finding the right partner is the answer.  Maybe finding the right occupation, the perfect place to live are answers as well.  There could be a myriad of ways to protect oneself from the clatter of the world.  Deep in our soul each of us can find a way.  Maybe it is fighting for what is right.  Maybe it is stealing away with the love of your life.  skp

Whether Planned or Unplanned, The Breakaway is Powerful

Some will 'cheer you on and privately watch and follow.'

Whether Planned or Unplanned,
The Breakaway is Powerful

It takes audacity,
Possibly foolishness,
Certainly courage,

To break away from
That which is pressing you
Down or pulling you back.

Some would say, ‘Be careful.’
Others would say, ‘Who cares?’

But, it is yours to say, not
Theirs.
Yours
And those who cheer
You on and those who
Privately
Watch and follow.

Hello there!  We are seriously in the winter season here in Oregon.  The roads are wet and sometimes icy.  The path out of our house is not always clear.  Nevertheless, on occasion we must.  If it were up to me, I would be staying home most of the time. Ah, silly me.   Sometimes a breakaway is called for.  Whether it is a serious change in a living situation or a small adjustment, taking the steps is vitally important...for us and those we lead.  Happy winter days!  Your poet, skp

A Clear and Sustainable Appreciation of Reality

All through the universe, realities may run together.

A Clear and Sustainable
Appreciation of Reality

Was is not real.
It passed in the night and
Transformed itself into
That which is now.

Now is what we have.
It has grown from many
Nights of passings,
From fading away to
Transfiguration to
Existence.

It has become what we know
And what we can trust.
It has become
Our everlasting.
That is what our love is,
That is what our life is,
Not was.

Hello there!  Have you missed me?  I have missed you.  I did not realize the affection of The Causerie to my readers until I stopped posting for awhile.  Very sorry, I was otherwise occupied with a little breast cancer, but I am much better now.  So, welcome back to The Causerie.  By the way, if you did not know, Causerie is a French word for discussion.  Therefore, feel free to email me or comment on The Causerie what you think. You and I will have a little discussion. ☺️

The poem posted above is an older piece, but still quite valid. We get so wrapped up in what 'was' in the world, we forget about what is going on now.  Our confusion could come from remembering happier times or it could come from times which were so difficult that even breathing was difficult.  No matter.  Now is our reality.   What is it that might make your 'now' better?  What will make you and yours happy?   I urge you to take a step to discover a better 'now'.  Thank you for reading.  Your poet, skp

Taking Leave You and I

Taking Leave,

You and I

Now let us
Find indulgence
In one anther’s person.
Let us wander the
Intimate hills and valleys
Of the soul-encased
Landscapes
We know so well.

We will call sanctuary
In each other’s arms
And find refuge
In the embrace.

You will lie still from
The thoughts that tangle.
I will listen to
Your steady breathing.

We will take leave of
The wars of the world
And the cares that bind.

We will forgive and forget
Yesterday,
Make peace
With tomorrow
And take pleasure
In today.

A Singular Kind of Love

They were so close, one would think that at times their souls mingled.

A Singular Kind of Love

They were so close
One would think
That at times, their souls
Mingled in each other’s bodies.
Their thoughts were often
Intertwined even when their arms,
Were not.

When separated,
Either for a moment
Or for a millennium,
Neither was quite sure
Of the time spent because,
They were never
Truly apart.

As In Most of Life's Passages, Acceptance is Not a Bad Thing

Birds taking flight may be similar to us making changes in our lives.

As in Most of Life’s Passages,
Acceptance is Not a Bad Thing

The absorbing effort of the
Ineffectual intellect
Is at most, fearful.
At the least, it is bewildering.

Somewhere in the middle,
Is the understanding
Of one’s own acumen--
Brilliance that is belied
By the moment
A mind
Must take
In order
To become
Clear.

I don't think I want to say too much about this poem.  To some, a discussion of it might be deeply personal.  To others it might become an explanation of life.  Other readers may find it utter nonsense.  However, I will say that it represents a transition time, and we all know that changes are not by definition, easy or difficult.  They just are changes.   skp
